Creative Laboratory-Residency is for young Lithuanian and Polish composers (up to 35 years old).

The main aim of the project is to commemorate the memory of Motiejus Kazimieras Sarbievijus, a prominent personality who resided in Kražiai, and to bring his work to the attention of the general public, giving it the opportunity to be revived in the form of new musical compositions.

According to Sarbievijus, the ruler of the nations “Queen Liberty” (Lat. Regina Libertas) is most fond of the Lithuanian and Polish lands, which is why it was decided to invite representatives of these countries to the residence.

Kražiai was chosen for the residency of young artists and the preparation and performance of a new musical programme not by chance, as it is an exceptional town in Šiauliai county. It is famous not only for the fact that Sarbievijus lived and worked here, but also for its magnificent historical past and cultural traditions, and has been declared an urban monument. It is hoped that the surroundings of Kražiai and the history-filled walls of the former 17th century Jesuit College will create an exceptional atmosphere and inspire new musical ideas for the creation of new works, which will be realised together with the Šiauliai State Chamber Choir “Polifonija”.

The organisers provide full accommodation and working conditions for young composers looking for peace, nature and a break from the city. The former Kražiai College building, where the residency will take place, is home to the M. K. Sarbievijaus Cultural Centre , a museum and tourist information.
