The programme of this concert presents sacred music from Corsica, revealing a lesser-known yet extraordinarily rich layer of the island’s musical culture.
Today Corsican singing is most often associated with its famous polyphonic tradition, a hallmark of the island’s identity. However, polyphony is only part of a broader and much older musical practice. Corsica was also the cradle of a powerful monophonic chant tradition, which flourished until the late 19th century before nearly disappearing from living memory.
The GŠ Ensemble is a vocal sacred music group closely connected with the Divine Mercy Shrine in Vilnius. Its repertoire is the result of many years of liturgical singing practice, in-depth study of sacred chant traditions, and creative collaboration with musicians from Poland, France, and Italy. The ensemble debuted in 2019 and has been actively participating in musical life ever since.
Programme: Corsican chants from 17th–18th-century Franciscan manuscripts
